George Fullerton and his brilliant employee Leo Fender are considered as founders and inventors of the electric bass guitar. It was first introduced in 1950âs and become such as great hit since then. In 1957, the first bass guitar with the split up feature was introduced. Gibson then released a violin shaped guitar, and six years after, more modern designs of the bass guitar were made. The success and popularity of bass guitars pushed many smaller guitar companies to follow the footsteps of Fender and Gibson by manufacturing and creating their own designs, versions and kinds of bass guitars. When rock music became widely popular in the 1960âs, bass guitar also became a household name.
The most common materials used for making bass guitars are wood and graphite. However, each part of the guitar uses different kinds of materials such as the alder for the guitar body, maple for the neck and rosewood for the fretboard. Usually, lacquer, oil and wax are used as finishing materials for the guitar. These bass guitar are usually flat or curved, some are headless with the tuning machine placed in the bridge. The most expensive type of bass guitars as well as bass guitars is those that are made of ovangkol, ebony and wenge.
Amplification function of the bass guitar is just similar with those of the electric guitar. To connect the amplifier to the speaker, some are contented with a patch cord while most electric bassists prefers a combo amplifier which a single cabinet having both the amplifier and speakers on.
Musicians considering a real career in playing instruments and creating music should put in a great deal of time and effort in practicing their craft using a bass guitar. With every guitart player, lucking techniques differ and are made their own. There are some plucking techniques that were made popular by famed guitar player such as the pizzicato style which is plucking the strings with the fingers. Another plucking technique is âthe Hookâ which involves only the index finger and this was popularized by James Jamerson.
Different musical genre also differs with the slapping and plucking styles of the bass guitar. Funky tones uses percussion sounds by slapping a string with the thumb and snapping strings using the index or middle fingers. This method became very popular during the Rock and Fusion era of the 1980âs and 1990âs.
Picks or plectrums are used for a more articulate, perfect and distinct sounding music even when the guitarist needs to speed up his play. For bass guitars, picks are usually thicker and heavier compared to normal picks.
